New Zealand Imported 76 Prefabricated Houses From China With All Internal Facilities

According to the English Herald, the Public Housing Authority (Kāinga Ora) is accelerating Hamilton's public housing construction projects, building 76 new housing units in China, importing them to New Zealand for installation.

The homes have completed interior renovations, kitchens, bathrooms, flooring installation, and interior painting. Once you arrive in New Zealand, you will need to be hooked up to foundations and water and electricity services.

Public Housing Authority general manager of construction and innovation Patrick Dougherty said the prefabricated homes had building consent and met New Zealand standards. The house was overseen by Tawera Group, the Public Housing Authority's New Zealand construction partner, and inspections were completed before the house left China to ensure it complied with New Zealand standards.

"The Public Housing Department is constantly innovating and using different construction methods to build public housing faster. We have added 'off-site manufacturing' methods to speed up delivery."

New Zealand has few "off-site manufactured" homes compared to many countries, with only around 10 per cent of construction using this technology. In Sweden, 80% of buildings are constructed off-site, compared with 50% in Finland and 30% in the United States.

The Public Housing Authority predicts that the proportion of "off-site manufacturing" in public housing developments nationwide will increase to 12% by the end of June 2024.

The 76 new homes are due to be completed between March and October 2024 and will be located in Hamilton

In addition, the Public Housing Authority has increased the supply of public housing in Waikato by redeveloping existing properties, purchasing land and working with developers, and purchasing new developments.

Nearly half of Auckland's new classrooms are prefabricated buildings. Can the construction industry with insufficient capacity reverse the situation?
